CSRT National Certification Process
The Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) is the national professional association for respiratory therapists. The CSRT awards a voluntary national credential, the CSRT RRT, obtained through a voluntary national certification mechanism. This national credential, is financed by individual voluntary membership in the CSRT. In provinces where the profession is self-regulated, respiratory therapists must pay a mandatory registration fee to a regulatory College for a license to practice in that province; the individual may additionally choose to support the national system through voluntary membership.

The CSRT has developed and established a national Occupational Profile for Respiratory Therapy, based upon a national job analysis, which identifies national entry to practice standards and the weighting matrix for its national certification examination. The Society has developed and implemented Accreditation Requirements linked to the CSRT Occupational Profile, for approving educational programs for Respiratory Therapists, for the purpose of determining the eligibility of graduates to write the CSRT's National Certification Examination and to receive the CSRT national credential (CSRT RRT).

The CSRT's Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education (CoARTE) is the accrediting body that assesses entry level educational programs to determine whether they meet the CSRT's national accredation requirements. The Society has contracted the Canadian Board for Respiratory Care, Inc., (CBRC), an examination production corporation, to produce an examination that reflects the national entry to practice standards and weighting matrix of the CSRT Occupational Profile. All exam applicants wishing to access the CSRT RRT credential, must have their eligibility verified by the CSRT prior to writing the examination. Provincial respiratory therapy regulatory bodies having a contractual agreement with the CSRT will indicate the eligibility of their candidates for provincial licensing purposes.

Founded in 1964 as the Canadian Society of Inhalation Therapy Technicians, the CSRT is dedicated to excellence in cardiorespiratory care.
