The CSRT Education Conference and Trade Show, being held in Quebec City, offers a wide variety of educational sessions that will provide RTs with professional development opportunities and as well as excellent venues for networking will colleagues and experts in the respiratory community. Streams include General therapeutics and Diagnostics, Neonatal/Pediatrics, Critical Care, Homecare/Community Care and Anesthesia Assistants, as well as a separate French stream. Canadian Thoracic Society Updates Guidelines on Sleep Apnea

The Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) Sleep Disordered Breathing Committee is proud to announce an update to the 2006 guideline "Diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing". The update provides evidence-based recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing for physicians and health care teams involved in the care of patients with sleep disordered breathing, and addresses the following topics:

  • wait times
  • portable monitoring
  • treatment of asymptomatic adult obstructive sleep apnea
  • treatment with conventional continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) vs. automatic CPAP
  • treatment of central sleep apnea syndrome in heart failure patients
  • bariatric surgery
  • complex sleep apnea
  • optimum positive airway pressure technologies

Dalhousie University School of Health Sciences AA Certificate Program

The School of Health Sciences at Dalhousie University, NS, offers a 21-credit hour certificate program in Anaesthesia Assistant. Three courses are offered online in the Fall term which include Anaesthesia and Related Equipment, Anaesthesia Medication Delivery and Clinical Anaesthesia. During the winter term students will complete a clinical practicum at a site of their choosing that meets the site criteria of the School. Admission to the program is open to registered Respiratory Therapists who have completed at least two years work experience in their profession. Interested applicants will apply for entry to the Bachelor of Health Science Post Diploma program and may choose to complete the AA certificate program only or continue studying online to earn a BHSc degree. Applications must be received by April 15, 2011. An Anaesthesia Assistant is a registered Respiratory Therapist with advanced training in the preparation, assessment, medication delivery and monitoring of the patient during the pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative periods. The Anaesthesia Assistant is able to provide both technical and clinical assistance to the anesthetist.
