Participants Needed for Moral Distress Study
A national interdisciplinary health ethics study based at the University of Alberta has been established. The CIHR-funded study examines PICU care providers’ stories of “moral distress”. Moral distress is a common phenomenon in pediatric intensive/critical care units. It can often be felt as frustration, anger, or loss of hope. Moral distress occurs when the way in which one feels morally obligated to act is blocked by circumstances, by other people, or by internal constraints. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Wendy Austin, the Canada Research Chair in Relational Ethics in Health Care. Other investigators include Dr. Daniel Garros (Stollery Children’s Hospital/U of A), Dr. Franco Carnevale (Montreal Children’s Hospital/McGill) and Dr. Arthur Frank (University of Calgary). We also have an RT on our advisory group.
